On November 6, 2024, the Institute of International Relations of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Turkmenistan hosted a significant meeting within the framework of the "U.S. Ambassadors Fund for Cultural Preservation” program. The institute had the honor of welcoming a distinguished delegation from ABS Merrion and Smith, the Library of Congress, and the University of Iowa. It is noteworthy that ABS Merrion and Smith’s project emerged as the winner of the competition within the program. This initiative is particularly significant, as it is dedicated to celebrating the 300th anniversary of the birth of the legendary Turkmen poet, Magtymguly Pyragy. The project aims to foster collaboration on critical issues, such as the preservation and restoration of ancient manuscripts, and to train local experts in modern methods of cultural heritage preservation.
One of focal issues of the meeting was to discuss the preservation of authenticity in the translation of cultural works. Translating literary texts, particularly those of great cultural significance, presents unique challenges.
During the meeting, participants learned how to preserve not only the linguistic meaning but also the deep cultural and historical context embedded in the works. A thought-provoking parallel was drawn between Magtymguly Pyragy and Mevlana Jalaluddin Rumi—two monumental figures in the cultural and spiritual legacy of the East. Although centuries and geography separate them, both poets embody universal values of harmony, humanism, love, and wisdom. Their timeless contributions resonate beyond their own cultures, offering ideas that transcend borders and continue to inspire generations around the world.
In the final segment of the meeting, the floor was given to the students, who enthusiastically interacted with the distinguished guests, asking them insightful questions. This exchange of ideas and experiences proved invaluable to the students, as it illuminated the intricacies of translation and the profound ways in which cultures interconnect. The discussion emphasized the importance of not only preserving but also faithfully transmitting cultural treasures across time, languages, and generations.
The meeting concluded on a high note, emphasizing that such dialogues play the key role in fostering international cooperation in the field of cultural heritage preservation. The ıssues discussed at the meeting once again demonstrated that common values and intercultural understanding play a major role in protecting and preserving the world cultural heritage for the benefit of future generations.
