The National Youth Conference on The Climate Change
On September 16, 2024, the National Youth Conference on Climate Change was held at the Institute of International Relations of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Turkmenistan organized by the Government of Turkmenistan, Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Turkmenistan, the Ministry of Education of Turkmenistan, the Ministry of Environmental Protection of Turkmenistan, the Ministry of Energy of Turkmenistan and the " Turkmengaz" State Concern together with the United Nations in Turkmenistan.
The event was attended by representatives of Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Turkmenistan, the Ministry of Education of Turkmenistan, the Ministry of Environmental Protection of Turkmenistan, the Ministry of Energy of Turkmenistan and the ,,Turkmengaz’’ State Concern, the UN agencies, the embassies Federal Republic of Germany, Great Britain, the United Arab Emirates, the Republic of Azerbaijan in Turkmenistan, the Delegation of the European Union Turkmenistan, the German Development Agency (GIZ), young ambassadors of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), as well as young people aged 17 to 35, teachers and students of higher educational institutions of Turkmenistan.
The conference was combined with significant day International Day for the Preservation of the Ozone Layer which outlines the importance of conference in deeply understanding the value of the environment. This event brought together young activists, students and representatives of international organizations, providing them with the unique opportunity to discuss vital environmental issues and explore opportunities for the young participation in the fight against climate change.
Then the conference was followed in seven groups that discussed such topics as International legal instruments in the field of climate change, IT technologies in the fight against climate change, Sustainable management of natural resources in the Turkmen Aral Sea region taking into account climate change, Sustainable management of water resources in agriculture, Development of a Strategy for informing the public about renewable energy sources and energy conservation, Air quality and protection OF the ozone layer, as well as Education catalyst for climate progress.
Participants discussed advanced technologies to improve energy efficiency, transition to clean energy sources and implementation of standards to reduce the environmental footprint. Particular attention was paid to developing a public awareness strategy about renewable energy and energy conservation, conducting educational campaigns and the role of media and social networks in promoting sustainable lifestyle, minimizing the climate impact of the energy sector, informing the public on the benefits of using renewable energy sources and energy conservation, innovative solutions for sustainable energy supply, and prospects for the development of solar and wind energy.
It was noted in the speeches that in Turkmenistan, environmental protection issues are one of the priority areas of state policy, and a lot of work is being carried out in the country in the field of environmental protection and rational use of natural resources. Although, Turkmenistan is rich for natural gas and oil, it uses every opportunity to use alternative energy to reduce gas effect with fostering obstacles for designing bright and green future. In addition, Turkmenistan actively supported the Paris Climate Agreement, which was ratified by our country in October 2016 and in accordance with the country’s commitments under the Paris Agreement, the National Strategy of Turkmenistan on Climate Change was revised and approved in a new edition in September 2019 by the Resolution of the President of Turkmenistan.
The Conference once again emphasized the role of the younger generation as a key element in strengthening adaptation of human on climate change, especially speech of STGs and actively participation of young people in projects to combat climate change, and provided an opportunity to discuss and resolve the main issues related to climate change affecting the nature of Turkmenistan, inspiring young people to build a sustainable future for the next generation. It strengthened the confidence of participants and clear understanding of where the world should move.
As a result of the fruitful discussions, the organizers announced future goals that would help make a significant contribution to solve climate change problems, promising even more opportunities for learning, collaboration, and action.
