During the meeting, students majoring in international law made presentations on cooperation between Turkmenistan and the United Nations in English and Russian languages. They discussed different areas of cooperation of Turkmenistan with the United Nations and its specialized agencies. They also stressed the significance of the UN Resolutions adopted at the initiative of Turkmenistan.
It is known that on March 2, 1992, the United Nations adopted a historic Resolution, according to which Turkmenistan is a full member of the United Nations. Cooperation of Turkmenistan with the United Nations is built on the principles of strategic partnership. The United Nations highly value Turkmenistan’s political role in the region and the world. The UN General Assembly adopted two Resolutions “On Permanent Neutrality of Turkmenistan”.
In addition, with the purpose of establishing a broad multilateral dialogue on the practical application of the principles of neutralism in preventing conflicts, eliminating their causes and consequences, the Group of Friends of Neutrality for peace, security and development was formed on the UN platform.
It is necessary to build up trust and respect in relations with each other. In this regard, following the principles of neutrality, peace-loving and good neighborliness Turkmenistan proposed initiative on declaring 2021 as International Year of Peace and Trust, which was supported by the UN General Assembly and adopted relevant resolution.
The United Nations is Turkmenistan’s main and strategic partner in implementing the Sustainable Development Goals as well. Close cooperation between Turkmenistan and the United Nations and specialized structures, mainly WHO, UNDP, UNICEF, UNFPA has been established in achieving the SDGS.
To sum up, the United Nations is a unique political structure that acts as a platform for dialogue and the exchange of opinions among different states, with a view to supporting them as they seek and develop mutually acceptance solutions to issues facing the region. The United Nations will continue to be strategic partner of Turkmenistan. This is because, as emphasized by our esteemed President in his speeches, “The United Nations was and will remain the only international organization with universal legitimacy.”
