Turkmen students successfully performed at the Competition on International Humanitarian Law named after F.F.Martens

From October 9 to October 12, 2023, a team of students from the Institute of International Relations of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Turkmenistan adequately represented our country at the annual Competition on International Humanitarian Law named after. F.F. Martens, which took place in the Yaroslavl region (Russian Federation).
I would like to remind you that this year more than 60 applications were submitted to the competition from various regions of Armenia, Belarus, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Moldova, Russia, Tajikistan, Turkmenistan, Uzbekistan.
When determining the best teams in the qualifying round, the jury took into account knowledge of international humanitarian law and public international law and the team’s ability to argue their statements. As a result, based on the results of the qualifying round, 23 teams were selected that scored the highest number of points in accordance with the criteria specified in the competition regulations.
The Turkmen team consisting of Kerven Muhammedgeldyev, Serdar Rakhimov and Davlet Babakuliev, under the leadership of senior lecturer of the Department of International Law and Comparative Law Durli Ballyeva, successfully passed the qualifying round, which included competitors from more than 20 higher educational institutions of the CIS.
This is not the first time that the Institute of International Relations of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Turkmenistan takes part in this competition, which is named after F.F.Martens, a Russian lawyer, diplomat and one of the founders of the Russian school of international law. The competition is held in the format of a role-playing game under the auspices of the Regional Delegation of the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) for students of law universities and faculties.
When determining the best team, professional knowledge, the team’s ability to argue their statements, defend their point of view, ability to present themselves, discuss and respond to the situation are taken into account. It should be noted that getting into the number of competitors is quite difficult. This international student competition is considered one of the most prestigious and largest in the field of international humanitarian law.
Throughout the week, the competition participants completed various situational tasks. They required not only knowledge of international humanitarian law, but also the ability to quickly navigate a complex legal situation. The members of the international jury were leading experts, professors in the field of international humanitarian law, candidates and doctors of law from several countries.
According to the results of the competition, the IMO team of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Turkmenistan showed one of the best results. The jury members were satisfied with her answers, and therefore we can safely say that this competition was an excellent practice and test of professional knowledge for us.
Participation in this competition provides an opportunity to deepen your knowledge and understand how international humanitarian law works in practice.

    Amanbagt USSAYEVA,
4 rd year student of the Faculty of International Law of the
Institute of International Relations of the
Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Turkmenistan.
