International Day of Awareness on Food Loss and Waste Reduction
People need to change their habits to avoid wasting food. Food loss and waste is a waste of natural resources, including water, soil and energy, not to mention human labour and time. Given that, agriculture accounts for a significant share of greenhouse gas emissions, such losses are accelerating climate change.
The «International Day for the Dissemination of Information on Food Loss and Waste» is celebrated every year on September 29. It was established by Resolution A/RES/74/209, adopted on December 19, 2019, by the United Nations General Assembly.
In the world where the number of people suffering from hunger has gradually increased since 2014 and tons of quality food products are spoiled or thrown away every day, it is advisable to re-examine the problem of reducing food losses. The pandemic has demonstrated that we need to work together to tackle global challenges, and in particular, in the way we produce and consume food.
FAO is the United Nations specialized agency that coordinates international efforts to fight hunger and malnutrition. FAO’s goal is to ensure food security for all and to ensure that the population has regular access to high quality food. FAO operates in over 130 countries around the world.
