International Day of Yoga
International Day of Yoga is celebrated every year on June 21st across the globe. It was officially declared by the United Nations General Assembly in 2014, following a proposal by Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi. Since then, millions of people around the world have come together to practice yoga and promote its physical, mental and spiritual benefits.
Yoga is an ancient practice that originated in India over 5,000 years ago. It is more than just physical exercise—it is a holistic approach to health and well-being. The word “yoga” comes from the Sanskrit word “yuj” meaning to unite or to join, symbolizing the connection between body, mind and spirit. Yoga helps improve flexibility, strength, balance, and mental clarity. It also promotes inner peace and reduces stress, anxiety, and depression. Since its inception, International Day of Yoga has been celebrated in more than 190 countries, with events organized by governments, educational institutions, yoga organizations and individuals. Large-scale yoga sessions are held in parks, stadiums and public spaces. In 2015, India hosted a record-breaking event in New Delhi with over 35,000 participants, including people from over 80 nations.
Each year, International Day of Yoga has a specific theme to focus on different aspects of yoga. Themes such as “Yoga for Health,” “Yoga at Home,” and “Yoga for Humanity” have highlighted yoga's role in promoting health, unity, and social responsibility. Yoga played an essential role in helping people cope with isolation and health challenges.
International Day of Yoga is not just a celebration of an ancient practice, but a reminder of the importance of a balanced and healthy lifestyle. It encourages people of all ages and backgrounds to take a step toward wellness. As the world faces increasing stress and lifestyle-related diseases, yoga offers a path to harmony—within oneself and with the world. By observing International Day of Yoga, we not only honor a cultural heritage but also take a collective step toward peace and well-being for all.
