October 24 as United Nations Day
The United Nations was established on October 24, 1945 to promote peace, freedom, liberty, friendship among peoples, the development of economic, social, cultural and humanitarian relations, the protection of human rights and the establishment of trust in each other. Member states of the United Nations widely celebrate this historic date as United Nations Day. Under the leadership of our esteemed President, this international holiday is widely celebrated in our country as well.
The creation of the United Nations was first decided in Moscow in October 1943, and then in 1944 at Dumbarton Oaks at a meeting of representatives of the USSR, the United States, and the United Kingdom. The organization was established on April 25, 1945, at a conference in San Francisco. On June 26 of that year, representatives of 50 countries unanimously adopted the UN Charter. The Regulation comes into force on October 24, which has become a holiday calendar. The UN headquarters are located in New York and the European headquarters in Geneva and Vienna. For many years, the UN has been instrumental in preventing international crises and resolving protracted disputes peacefully. The Organization operates on the basis of non-interference in the internal affairs of states. The UN has six major organs and a range of specialized agencies and programs such as UNESCO, the WHO, UNDP, UNEP and others.
At present, there are 193 UN member states. Turkmenistan became a member of the United Nations on March 2, 1992, an important event in the history of our Turkmen people. Since productive cooperation has been established between the United Nations and Turkmenistan. The UN agencies have been cooperating with the Turkmenistan in all spheres. In particular, the United Nations have been supporting the country to achieve its development priorities. The United Nations is the country’s main partner in achieving the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
It is known, on December 12, 1995 the UN General Assemblyadopted the Resolution on the “Permanent Neutrality of Turkmenistan”. In 2015, on the 20th anniversary of the Permanent Neutrality of Turkmenistan, the UN General Assembly adopted the second Resolution on the “Permanent Neutrality of Turkmenistan”. Furthermore, At the 71st session of the UN General Assembly, a Resolution declaring December 12 as International Neutrality Day was adopted unanimously.
