FEBRUARY 10 – WORLD PULSES DAY!
Every year on February 10, the global community celebrates World Pulses Day. This observance was officially established by the UN General Assembly in December 2018, with the inaugural celebration taking place in 2019. The purpose of this date is to draw attention to the invaluable benefits of pulse crops for human health, food security, and sustainable agricultural development.
The UN highlights three key factors that make pulses—such as beans, lentils, chickpeas, mung beans, and peas—a true "superfood": They are an affordable source of high-quality plant-based protein. Pulses require significantly less water to grow compared to cereal crops. These plants possess a unique ability to fix nitrogen, naturally enhancing soil fertility.
For our country, this day holds special meaning, as it is closely intertwined with national traditions and agricultural strategy. Often referred to as "plant-based meat," pulses are a strategic resource that ensures the food basket is reliably supplied with quality protein.
In the hot climate of Turkmenistan, mung beans (mash) and chickpeas (nut) are among the most promising crops. They demonstrate remarkable resilience and drought tolerance compared to other plants. Furthermore, integrating pulses into crop rotation systems allows our land to "rest" and naturally replenish its nitrogen levels. Ultimately, promoting pulses is not just a matter of healthy eating—it is a vital step toward the ecological well-being of our planet.
