International Day of Journalists’ Solidarity
Journalism is considered as one of the most dangerous professions in the world. Each year on September 8, International Day of Journalists’ Solidarity is celebrated in order to prevent threats of violence and attacks against journalists. This international day was established in 1958 in Bucharest at the IV Congress of the International Organization of Journalists in memory of the renowned Czech journalist Julius Fuchik who was executed by the Nazis on September 8, 1943.
The main goal of this international day is to promote the preservation of peace and the development of a spirit of cooperation and unity among journalists. With that aim, many international projects are implemented around the globe. CAN, the largest and oldest international journalist organization in the world, was established by representatives of 21 countries on June 8 1946. The main task of the organization has always been preserving peace and friendship through honest, truthful and free publicity.
On this day all over the world conferences and meetings are held to commemorate distinguished journalists who left ever-lasting mark in the history of journalism. The ceremony of awarding the Pulitzer prize, for example, are almost always held on September 8.
