World Day of Statistics
The term "statistics" comes from the Latin word "status", which means "condition and state of affairs." The emergence of statistics was associated with the needs of public administration. Already the early states - China, Egypt, Ancient Greece - needed data on the population and its structure, the property status of citizens, the number of livestock, land, etc., which laid the foundation for statistical practice.
Statistics as a science began to develop from the second half of the 17th century, when two main schools developed in Europe: in England - the mathematical school of statistics, in Germany - the descriptive school of statistics. Well-known representatives of the descriptive school of statistics were the German scientists G. Konring and G. Achenwal. They considered that the main purpose of statistics is description of the political state and attractions of the state, where numerical characteristics were only part of the subject of statistics.
Statistics is a vital tool for economic and social development. In order for the development process to proceed successfully, data collection and statistical analysis of the level of poverty, the availability of education, the prevalence of diseases and much more is necessary.
On June 3, 2010, the General Assembly adopted resolution A/64/267, in which it approved the observance of the first World Statistics Day on October 20, 2010. The General Assembly resolution recognizes the fundamental importance of a strong national statistical capacity to produce timely and reliable statistics and indicators to measure the progress of a country, which provide the necessary basis for informed policy decisions and monitoring of development goals.
