A Training Session on Public Diplomacy Was Held
On February 13, 2026, the Institute of International Relations of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Turkmenistan hosted a specialized training session and an interactive Q&A discussion on public diplomacy, featuring diplomats from the Embassy of the United States of America in Turkmenistan.
The primary objective of the event was to expand the knowledge of students and faculty in the field of international relations, specifically providing a comprehensive understanding of the nature of diplomacy, methods, and role of public diplomacy as one of the most vital sectors of modern international cooperation. The training session featured presentations by Joshua Tilton, English Language Fellow at the Institute of International Relations of the MFA of Turkmenistan; Rahym Akmyradov, Lecturer at the Department of International Relations and Diplomacy; as well as Mark Gul, Chief of the Political-Economic Section, and Daniel Riffle, Cultural Affairs Officer of the U.S. Embassy in Turkmenistan.
During the presentations, particular emphasis was placed on the crucial role of public diplomacy in strengthening trust between states, developing cultural and humanitarian cooperation, and fostering a positive national image in the international community. Drawing on their professional experience, the diplomats shared insightful information regarding successful models of public diplomacy implemented in various countries, the possibilities of modern communication tools, and the role of youth in international relations.
In the course of the meeting, students engaged in discussions by asking questions regarding the day-to-day operations of Foreign Service, the specific nuances of conducting diplomatic relations, and the organizational procedures for international events. The interactive Q&A session enhanced the participants’ engagement and further stimulated their professional interest in their chosen fields.
This event was of significant importance in integrating students’ theoretical knowledge with practical experience, providing a deep study of contemporary trends in international cooperation, and elevating the professional preparation levels of future diplomats. Such meetings serve as a clear testament to Turkmenistan's policy of openness in the sphere of international relations and its commitment to developing educational partnerships.
