June 26 - International Day Against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking
On December 7, 1987, at the 42nd session of the UN General Assembly, a resolution was adopted establishing on June 26 each year the International Day against Drug Abuse, Distribution and Illicit Trafficking. The main purpose of the adoption of this Declaration is to call on the world community to take an active part in the prevention of drug use in the world, as well as their illicit trafficking.
Turkmenistan has made the decisive fight against drug trafficking a priority of its state policy and is currently setting a worthy example to other countries. Our country participates in the UN international conventions on the fight against illicit trafficking in drugs and psychotropic substances, as well as in regional and international projects and programs of the UN Office on Drugs and Crime and the European Union. The main task of this work is to unite efforts to combat drug trafficking, strengthen border control over drug trafficking, as well as provide technical assistance and training for military personnel and law enforcement officials.
In accordance with the programs developed under the leadership of the esteemed President, large-scale work is being carried out to combat and identify drug addiction, and treat drug addicts. The Law of Turkmenistan "On Measures to Combat Drugs, Psychotropic Substances, Precursors and Their Illicit Trafficking" is also a vivid evidence of their work. Regular anti-drug measures are producing positive results. All structures are actively involved in this activity, including health and educational institutions and non-governmental organizations as well as the media.
The state's decisive support for the implementation of a program of active promotion of a healthy lifestyle, mass physical education and sports increases the importance of the work carried out in this area. Today, new schools with modern stadiums, fitness complexes, gyms and swimming pools operate in all regions of the country.
