Views of Turkmenistan at the 79th Session of the UN General Assembly
On June 6, 2024, Turkmenistan was unanimously elected as the Deputy Chairman of the 79th session of the UN General Assembly, which commenced on September 10, 2024. The agenda of the annual session includes various topics, such as addressing complex issues in specific regions, achieving the Sustainable Development Goals, and supporting developing countries. The main event of this session is the high-level meeting, scheduled from September 24 to September 28, with additional discussions on September 30. Many heads of state and ministers will participate to discuss important issues. This year, for the first time, the "Future Summit" will take place, focusing on peace and global security. At the end of the summit, key documents like the Pact for the Future, the Global Digital Compact, and the Declaration on Future Generations will be approved. The summit will be held on September 22-23 to create a new international consensus for a better future. The high-level week, featuring heads of state and government, is planned for September 23-27.
Peace and Security
Turkmenistan will continue its efforts to develop a national security strategy. In this context, the country invites all interested nations, international organizations, and UN agencies to cooperate. Work on international documents will proceed, including those celebrating the 30th anniversary of Turkmenistan's permanent Neutrality and the 15th anniversary of the Treaty on the Creation of a Nuclear Weapon-Free Zone in Central Asia. Leveraging its significant experience in promoting neutrality and peace initiatives, Turkmenistan has proposed creating a specialized training program for UN mediators.
Socio-Economic Direction
In this area, Turkmenistan aims to develop a comprehensive framework program for transitioning to a circular economy, in partnership with the UN Department of Economic and Social Affairs and five regional economic commissions. This initiative supports the UN's "Decade of Sustainable Transport" for 2026-2035, with a draft action plan already in progress. Key priorities include the creation of the Global Atlas of Sustainable Transport and the Alliance for Cooperation on Global Energy Security and Sustainable Development.
A Humane System
As a key participant in promoting the global agenda of "Sports for Peace and Development", Turkmenistan places great importance on sports diplomacy. Based on the experience from the first UN Diplomatic Friendship Games held in New York in April 2024 during Sustainable Development Week, Turkmenistan has presented a draft resolution to establish these games annually under UN auspices. To enhance intercultural dialogue and implement UN General Assembly resolutions supporting multilingualism in international relations, Turkmenistan has proposed continuing the project for the "World Day of Turkic Languages."
In conclusion, as a neutral country elected as the vice-chairman of the 79th session of the UN General Assembly, Turkmenistan demonstrates a responsible and consistent approach to its participation in this session, reaffirming its commitment to diverse international cooperation that aligns with the interests of global peace, prosperity, and sustainable development.
