8 June-World Oceans Day
Despite the ocean's central role in the balance of our planet, we actually know little about its importance. In fact, most of the waters remain largely unexplored, as we have explored only about a tenth of their depth. Oceans cover more than 70% of the planet. They are our source of life, supporting the existence of humanity and every other organism on Earth. The ocean produces at least 50% of the planet's oxygen, is home to much of Earth's biodiversity, and is the primary source of protein for more than a billion people worldwide, although the oceans are now in need of support, humanity's consuming problems. With 90% of large fish populations depleted and 50% of coral reefs destroyed, we are taking more from the ocean than we can replace. We need to work together to create a new balance with the ocean that no longer drains its bounty, but restores its energy and brings it new life. The UN is joining forces with decision-makers, indigenous leaders, scientists, private sector leaders, civil society, celebrities and youth activists to demonstrate how our relationship with the ocean must urgently change as our efforts to date have only scratched the surface. To stimulate widespread ocean expansion, we need to awaken new depths. Join us in celebrating the value of the oceans. World Oceans Day reminds everyone of the important role the oceans play in our daily lives. They are the lungs of our Planet, a major source of food and medicine, and an integral part of the biosphere. The purpose of the day is to inform the public about the impact of human activities on the ocean, develop a worldwide human movement for the ocean, and mobilize and unite the world's population in the project of sustainable ocean management. This year, the United Nations will hold a hybrid celebration of the annual event on Friday, June 7, 2024, which will be held at UN Headquarters in New York and will be broadcast live. It will focus on the 2024 theme, “Awakening New Depths.”
