Turkmen Youth Climate Changers on their Way from Dubai to Baku
On 12th of June, 2024, in a collaborative effort with the UN Resident Coordinator’s Office, the Embassy of the United Arab Emirates in Turkmenistan, and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Turkmenistan, an event was held to commemorate World Environment Day and to prepare for the upcoming Climate Change Conference (COP29) in Baku, Republic of Azerbaijan. This significant event marked the handover of the COP28 Presidency to Azerbaijan and reviewed the outcomes of COP28 while highlighting the pivotal role of youth in the decision-making processes of COP29.
The gathering brought together representatives from the UN Country Team, the Embassy of the Republic of Azerbaijan, the diplomatic community, national partners, young SDG Ambassadors, and environmental activists.
Prominent speakers included Ahmed al Hameli, UAE Ambassador to Turkmenistan, Dmitry Shlapachenko, UN Resident Coordinator in Turkmenistan, Gismet Gezalov, Ambassador of Azerbaijan to Turkmenistan, and the Deputy Minister of Environmental Protection of Turkmenistan. They underscored the significance of collaborative efforts in combating climate change and the commitment to achieving sustainable development goals.
Following the opening ceremony, statements were delivered by the Deputy Minister of Education and Mr. Magtymguly Akmuradov, Advisor to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Turkmenistan. They emphasized the crucial role of education and diplomacy in promoting sustainable solutions and enhancing global cooperation.
The conference also spotlighted the "Road Map for Turkmenistan Conference of Youth on Climate Change 2024," presented by Gulshat Ayydova. This strategic framework aims to bolster youth-led initiatives in climate action. Participants of the Local Conference of Youth (LCOY) shared their valuable experiences from LCOY2023, offering reflections and insights to guide future engagement in global climate summits.
This event showcased the commitment of Turkmenistan and its partners to fostering youth involvement and strengthening international collaboration in the fight against climate change. The transition of COP28 leadership to Azerbaijan sets a promising stage for COP29, where young voices will play a crucial role in shaping sustainable futures.
