UN Climate Change Conference COP 27
This year, the UN Climate Change Conference COP27 takes place from 6 to 18 November. Participating countries are expected to present updated emission reduction plans during the summit that will meet the goal of keeping the global temperature from rising by more than 1.5 degrees Celsius by 2100.
It all started in 1992 when the UN organized the "Earth Summit" in Rio de Janeiro in Brazil. It adopted the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC), and also created an agency coordinating its implementation - the UN Climate Change Secretariat. This year the UN Climate Conference is taking place in Sharm el-Sheikh. This demonstrates "a sense of solidarity and empathy for the suffering of the victims of climate disasters," said the president of the conference, Egyptian Foreign Minister Sameh Shukri. At the same time, he stressed that "liability or compensation" is not the subject of negotiations. The background for it was extreme weather events around the world, as well as the food and energy crisis caused by the war in Ukraine. At the same time, scientists' data show that the current efforts to combat carbon emissions and protect the future of our planet are not enough.
COP 27 creates a unique opportunity in 2022 to bring the world together, to strengthen multilateral cooperation, to rebuild trust and to engage at the highest level to increase our ambition and strengthen action on climate change. COP27 should be remembered as the "Implementation Conference" - an event where we will restore the grand ambition of the goals that underpinned the Paris Agreement.
