PECULIARITIES AND SIGNIFICANCE OF THE ENGLISH LANGUAGE
April 23 marks the UN English Language Day. The date traditionally observed as both the birthday and date of death of William Shakespeare. The aim of the UN’s language days is to promote multilingualism and cultural diversity as well as to promote equal use of all six official languages throughout the Organization.
Mankind uses hundreds of languages. Every language has some peculiarities. Grammar of some languages is quite complex. Some languages do not have sufficient number of words. Some languages are spoken by millions of persons. Some are spoken by just few hundred persons. Here is some peculiarities of the English language. The English language was created in England. It is rich in all kinds of literature, including technical books and journals. It has taken thousands of words from other languages such as French, Latin, German, Greek and so on. English grammar is fairly simple. Nouns in many other languages have grammatical gender and accordingly some verbs and adjectives undergo changes. This complexity is absent in English. English is rich in vocabulary, its grammar is simple, its counting system is simple.
Throughout history, this language has spread to many parts of the world. It is used as a link language for International business and diplomacy. Nowadays English is one of the most used languages. In most countries English is used as a state language. English takes the first place among foreign languages studied in educational institutions worldwide. It occupies a very important place in such spheres as economy, trade, sports and tourism. This language has become the language of international communication in the field of aviation and shipping. In addition, the management of numerous innovative technologies is carried out through the English language. English is also the working language of many scientific conferences, symposiums and forums.
Knowledge of English allows for training, advanced training and working in foreign countries, the greatest privilege for employment, for reading Shakespeare and other British and American writers in the original language, ecxhaning information and communicating.
In general, the knowledge of foreign languages opens up wide opportunities for studying the peculiarities of cultures, traditions and the history of different peoples. IN this regard, the study of foreign languages is the priority of the educational system of Turkmenistan.
