Exploring the World of Diplomacy: Student Internship in Mashhad
The renowned Persian thinker and scientist Avicenna once said: "Knowledge without practice is like a tree without fruit". These words perfectly capture the essence of professional internships, which we, students of the Institute of International Relations of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Turkmenistan, are honored to undertake in our country’s foreign diplomatic missions.
From the very first days of autumn, we had the opportunity to become part of the work at the Consulate General of Turkmenistan in the Islamic Republic of Iran, in the city of Mashhad. The internship will last until the end of November, but even now we can confidently say: each day here is a valuable lesson that helps bridge theoretical knowledge with real diplomatic practice.
The Consulate General plays a vital role in the lives of our compatriots living or staying in Iran. From the very beginning, we realized that consular work is not only about documents and formalities but, above all, about caring for people—resolving urgent issues and providing support in difficult situations. Observing this work offers a deeper understanding of the enormous responsibility a diplomat carries toward their country and its citizens.
It is important to highlight the team at the Consulate. This is a close-knit group where every employee is not only a professional but also someone ready to support and share their experience. The atmosphere of goodwill and mentorship creates a unique sense of confidence and comfort. For us students, it is especially meaningful that the staff go beyond their official duties to show us another side of life abroad.
Mashhad, the city of our internship, is rightfully called the heart of northeastern Iran and the spiritual capital of Razavi Khorasan Province. It lies only about 75 kilometers from the Turkmenistan border, and it feels as though the steppe winds still carry the breath of the neighboring homeland. Today, it is Iran’s second-largest city, with a population of over 3.5 million, yet it has preserved its spiritual magnetism and hospitality, drawing pilgrims and travelers from across the world.
Mashhad is rightly considered a spiritual and cultural center of Iran: here stands the Mausoleum of Imam Reza — a holy site visited by pilgrims from around the world. We have also visited museums, parks, and traditional bazaars, where the true life of the city, with its vibrant colors and rich artisanal traditions, reveals itself. These discoveries help us gain a deeper understanding of the host country, its people, and its customs.
The local culture leaves a lasting impression. Iranians are known for their openness, respect toward guests, and genuine interest in other peoples. Traditions of hospitality can be felt everywhere — whether in a cup of fragrant tea offered in a home or in kind words spoken on the street. By becoming acquainted with the customs and lifestyle, we increasingly realize how vital it is for a diplomat to value and respect the culture of the country where they serve.
Although our internship is still ongoing, we already feel that this experience will become a turning point in both our professional and personal development. Each day brings something new — whether it is participating in the work of the Consulate, receiving guidance from mentors, or discovering the rich cultural heritage of Mashhad. Altogether, this provides not only practical skills but also a broader worldview.
On this occasion, we would like to express our heartfelt gratitude to our Hero-Arkadag and Arkadagly Hero Serdar, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Turkmenistan, and the administration of our Institute for granting us such a valuable opportunity. Our sincere gratitude also goes to the staff of the Consulate General for their attention, care, and willingness to help young specialists feel part of the diplomatic service. Ahead lie many more days sure to be filled with bright events, new knowledge, and experiences that we will cherish for a lifetime.
