WORLD HUMANITARIAN DAY
In December 2008, the UN General Assembly in its resolution declared 19th August as “THE WORLD HUMANITARIAN DAY”. The United Nations has set a mission to raise public awareness of humanitarian relief activities around the world. In addition, the establishment of the Day of Humanitarian Aid reminds of the importance of international cooperation in this area and also pays tribute to everyone who worked and continues to work in it.
Every day, overcoming danger and adversity, humanitarian workers help millions of people in countries affected by war or natural disaster. The UN resolution emphasizes their work is a clear illustration of the fact that assistance to those in need should and can be provided regardless of religion, race or gender.
Every year, disasters inflict immense suffering on millions of people. Experts say that in recent decades, the humanitarian community has significantly improved its ability to respond to various disasters caused by natural or human factors, as well as to anticipate them. This is mainly due to the dedicated work of thousands of people who have chosen to work to provide humanitarian assistance.
Variety of informational and educational events are held on World Humanitarian Day. In addition, on this day, the world community remembers the people who lost their lives saving others in order to pay tribute to them. One of them was Sergio Vieira De Mello the official representative of the United Nations who died on August 19, 2003 in a bombing at the UN Office in Baghdad. In honor of this sad event, a date was chosen for World Humanitarian Day.
