The UN officially recognizes and supports World Radio Day
October 19, 2011 UNESCO General Conference proclaimed February 13 World Radio Day. On that day in 1946, the United Nations established Radio UN. On January 14, 2013, the UN General Assembly formally approved the proclamation of the Day and during the 67th session, the UN General Assembly adopted a resolution proclaiming February 13 as World Radio Day.
Initially, the proposal came from the Permanent Delegation of Spain to UNESCO. The idea of establishing World Radio Day came from the president of the Spanish Academy of Radio Jorge Álvarez.
Radio is a powerful means of disseminating information about the activities, merit, achievements and problems of humanity and being a platform for everyone to discuss pressing issues. Globally, radio remains the most widely used media.
The radio is able to reach the widest audience, conveying to the listener the voices and opinions of the most diverse representatives of society. The radio stations offer the widest range of programs targeting a wide variety of audiences.
Radio is an inexpensive medium capable of reaching out to the most remote communities and vulnerable segments of the population, enabling all people, regardless of their level of education and access, to participate in discussions on issues Radio is also an important means of informing the public in emergencies and in the aftermath of natural disasters.

Radio is also the most important means of alerting the population in emergency situations and in the elimination of the consequences of natural disasters.
Radio has unique capabilities in terms of bringing people together and engaging in positive dialogue. By listening to its audience and responding to its needs, radio services provide a platform for people with different perspectives and positions, which plays an important role in solving the problems we face.
The Day's goals include raising public and media awareness of the importance of radio, calling on policy makers to ensure and providing access to information through radio, and strengthening communications and international cooperation among broadcasters.
