International Day of United Nations Peacekeepers
International Day of United Nations Peacekeepers has been celebrated since May 29, 2003.
On May 29 in 1948, the United Nations peacekeeping mission, dubbed the United Nations peacekeeping force, launched its first operation in Palestine. The United Nations International Day for the Protection of Peace was established in 2002 on the basis of UN Resolution A / RES / 57/129 of the United Nations General Assembly. The proposal to ratify the resolution was made to the UN officials in a report by the UN Special Committee on Peacekeeping. The council has covered more than a hundred countries. At the resolution of General Assembly A / RES / 57/129 called on the United Nations, non-governmental organizations and individuals to pay tribute to those who have died and to continue to serve here. The resolution states that United Nations peacekeeping force was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize in 1988 with the maintain of the World.
Every year, on May 29, the UN Secretary-General in New York holds a wreath-laying ceremony in honor of the peacekeepers who died on duty. In honor of the peacekeepers, the UN Secretary-General has established a special award the “Dag Hammarshell Medal” (in honor of the United Nations Secretary-General). Today, the Hammarsheld Medal is awarded to those who died in peacekeeping missions over the past year.
Messages issued by the UN Secretary-General on the occasion of International Peace Day are regularly published. More than 72 thousand servicemen and 15 thousand civilians are currently employed in the 18 operations run by the Peace Department. The United Nations is the largest multilateral organization to resolve conflicts in the world.
