20th June - World Refugee Day
The United Nations is making great efforts to maintain world peace. However, due to the difficult situation in some countries, people are forced to leave their ancestral homes and move to other countries. Each country has a responsibility to address these problems, as well as to protect the rights of refugees who have migrated to other countries.
World Refugee Day is celebrated every year on June 20. World Refugee Day was first established in 2001 on the basis of a resolution of the UN General Assembly of December 4, 2000. The 1951 Convention relating to the Status of Refugees celebrated its 50th anniversary in 2001. This convention clarifies the meaning of the concept of “refugee” and regulates their rights and freedoms, as well as the relations of countries with refugees.
Our country, under the leadership of the esteemed President, makes every effort to ensure welfare of refugees and their legal protection. This is exemplified by the fact that refugees are granted the citizenship of our country every year. In addition on June 3, 2017, the Law of Turkmenistan “On Refugees” was adopted, which also clearly demonstrates the care for refugees and their lives in our country.
