International Day of Older Persons
On December 14, 1990, the United Nations General Assembly declared October 1 as the International Day of Older Persons. This was preceded by initiatives such as the Vienna International Plan of Action on Ageing – which was adopted by the 1982 World Assembly on Ageing – and endorsed later that year by the UN General Assembly. Since its announcement, this day has been celebrated all over the world. On this day, various cultural events are held in order to raise awareness about the contribution of the elderly to the communities in which they live.
This year on this holiday, the President of Independent, Permanently Neutral Turkmenistan sent congratulations to the elderly.
According to the special document adopted by the General Assembly of the United Nations for the purpose of drawing public attention to the situation of the elderly, this holiday, which is celebrated at the international level, occupies a worthy place in the public life of the country.
