THE FESTIVE CONFERENCE DEDICATED TO THE 30 TH ANNIVERSARY OF TURKMENISTAN’S ACCESSION TO THE UNESCO “TURKMENISTAN – UNESCO: COOPERATION FOR PROSPERITY”
On August 17, 2023, a solemn conference was held at the Institute of International
Relations of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Turkmenistan dedicated to the 30th
anniversary of Turkmenistan's entry into the United Nations Educational, Scientific
and Cultural Organization "Turkmenistan - UNESCO: Cooperation for Prosperity".
The festive conference was attended by Deputy Chairmen of Cabinets Ministers of
Turkmenistan, representatives of public organizations, heads of UN agencies in
Turkmenistan, representatives of diplomatic corps, representatives of the mass
media, and representatives of the Ministries of Turkmenistan. At the beginning of
the solemn conference, the participants were acquainted with the exhibition, which
presented various products created by the talent of folk artisans and Turkmen
women, works of applied art.
At the event, Deputy Chairman of the Cabinet of Ministers, Minister of Foreign
Affairs of Turkmenistan Rashid Meredov, UN Resident Coordinator in
Turkmenistan Dmitry Shlapachenko, Executive Secretary of the National
Commission of Turkmenistan for UNESCO Chinar Rustemova, Officer-in-Charge
of the OSCE Centre in Ashgabat Rune Castberg, Minister of Education of
Turkmenistan Gurbangul Atayeva, specialist of the National Museum of Turkmen
Carpet Mayagozel Atayeva, senior lecturer of the Turkmen National Conservatory
named after Maya Kuliyeva, merited Bahshi of Turkmenistan Kerven Yovbasarov
and also via video link First Deputy Director General of UNESCO Xing Qu,
Deputy Director General and Executive Secretary of the Intergovernmental
Oceanographic Commission Vladimir Ryabinin, Director of the UNESCO Cluster
Office in Tehran Golda El-Khoury, Director of the UNESCO Institute for
Information Technologies in Education Tao Zhan.
Turkmenistan became a full member of UNESCO on August 17, 1993. One of the
main goals of UNESCO is to promote the strengthening of peace and security by
expanding cooperation between countries and peoples in the field of science,
culture and education. In 1994, Turkmenistan joined the UNESCO Convention on
the Protection of the World Cultural and Natural Heritage. Within the framework
of this Convention, the state cultural and historical reserve "Ancient Merv" was
included in the UNESCO World Cultural Heritage List in 1999, in 2005 the state
cultural and historical reserve "Kunya-Urgench", in 2007 the state cultural and
historical monument "Parthian fortresses of Nisa". In 2011, Turkmenistan joined
the UNESCO Convention for the Protection of the Intangible Cultural Heritage.
The UNESCO Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity
included in 2015 the destan art “Gorogly”, in 2017 the Turkmen national art of
singing and dancing “Kushtdepdi”, in 2019 the traditional Turkmen art of carpet
weaving, in 2021 the skill of making dutar and traditional musical performing arts
combined with singing. In 2022, “The Turkmen Art of Embroidery”, “Sericulture
and Traditional Silk Production for Quality” and “Traditions of Retelling the
Parables of Khoja Nasreddin” are included in the UNESCO Representative List of
the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity.
At the end of the solemn conference, the participants thanked the Hero-Arkadag
and the esteemed President for the successfully implemented foreign policy to
increase the significance of the cultural and spiritual values of the Turkmen people
at the world level, adopted an Appeal to the esteemed President of Turkmenistan
Serdar Berdimuhamedov on behalf of the participants in the conference
"Turkmenistan - UNESCO: cooperation in the name of prosperity".
