Today is World Press Freedom Day
Today, May 3, the world celebrates International Press Freedom Day. Celebrating this date began after the proclamation of the holiday by the UN General Assembly in 1993. In honor of this holiday, UNESCO and partner organizations hold actions and events around the world on certain topics, which change every year. The theme for 2023 is "Freedom of expression as a driving force for the realization of all other human rights". In addition to that, an annual international press freedom and safety conference is held annually to celebrate Press Freedom Day, with the participation of journalists, members of the public, academics and national authorities. The ceremony of awarding the UNESCO World Prize for Contribution to the Development of a Free Press named after Guillermo Cano, a Colombian journalist, is timed to coincide with the celebration of World Press Freedom Day.
