INTERNATIONAL DAY OF THE WORLD’S INDIGENOUS PEOPLES
August 9 is the International Day of world’s indigenous people. Indigenous people are carriers of a very ancient unique culture and traditions, inherited from their ancestors. These people are distinguished by their originality, socio-economic and cultural characteristics. There are currently approximately 476 million indigenous people on the planet, who live in 90 countries and represent many languages and cultures. This holiday was established to address the problems of indigenous peoples and attract the attention of the public around the world. The promotion and protection of the rights of indigenous peoples is one of the main priorities of the world.
This year marked the beginning of a new milestone in the history of indigenous cultures - the Decade of Indigenous Languages. Every year the events are dedicated to one specific theme. The theme for 2022 is “The Role of Indigenous Women in the Preservation and Transmission of Traditional Knowledge”. Women play a fundamental and important role in the preservation and transmission of traditional knowledge and as custodians of natural resources and scientific knowledge.
Since indigenous peoples are an integral part of cultural diversity, there is a holiday for them in the international calendar. Fairs, concerts, exhibitions and master classes are held every year, aimed at developing interest in the cultural heritage of indigenous peoples living around the world.
