World Chess Day

On July 20, the International Chess Federation (FIDES) celebrates the World Chess Day, established in 1924 by the International Chess Federation. In 1861, a game timing system with strict rules was established. The World Chess Fund was founded at the Ninth Summer Olympics in Paris, France on July 20, 1924. The International Chess Day was established on July 20, 1966 to commemorate the founding of the Fund. The concept of celebrating the World Chess Day on July 20 was presented by UNESCO. Since 1966, on the initiative of the International Chess Federation, chess players around the world have celebrated July 20 as the World Chess Day. The proclamation by the UN of the World Chess Day not only recognizes the important role of the International Chess Fund in supporting international cooperation in chess and aims to improve friendly harmony among all the peoples of the world, but will also provide an important platform for the development of dialogue, solidarity and a culture of peace.
