International Day of Democracy
International Day of Democracy was established by the General Assembly of the United Nations in 2007 and celebrated annually on 15th of September. This date is timed to coincide with the 20th anniversary of the first international conference of new and restored democracies, which was celebrated in 2008. In the Millennium Declaration, world leaders pledged to spare no effort to promote democracy and the rule of law, and to uphold human rights and fundamental freedoms.
The International Day of Democracy is a good occasion to pay attention to the state of democracy in the world. Democracy is not only a goal, but also a process, and only with the full participation and support of the international community, state authorities, society and individual citizens, the ideals of democracy can be realized for every person in every corner of the world.
The international holiday was created in order to draw the attention of society of all countries to the actions of peoples in the management of the world. The political system of states around the world has been building for more than one year. During this time, the public has experienced various methods of government and organization, submitting to various political regimes. On the way to perfection, the people came to a common conclusion that it is impossible to abuse power, it must be equally divided between each cell of society and used strictly in the interests of the country, for its good.
UNESCO Director-General Audrey Azoulay noted that "On this International Day of Democracy, we are celebrating more than a simple principle of political organization: we are celebrating an ideal whose foundations are “the dignity, equality and mutual respect” of people – the very foundations of the Constitution of UNESCO.”
