СOP26: Conference on Turkmenistan’s Initiatives
On November 9, 2021, a roundtable discussion was held at the Institute of International Relations of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Turkmenistan. It was dedicated to the initiatives put forward by the Turkmen delegation to the 26th session of the Conference of the Parties to the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change (COP26) at the Scottish Conference Center in Glasgow.
The meeting was attended by representatives of the Embassy of the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland in Turkmenistan, Representative of the United Nations Development Program, Head of the National Team for Preparing the Fourth Communication and the first two-year report of Turkmenistan on Climate Change, the Institute of International Relations of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Turkmenistan.
In his opening remarks, the rector of the Institute, Jumamyrat Gurbangeldiyev, emphasized that the initiatives put forward by the head of the Turkmen delegation were of great importance around the world and that these initiatives were aimed at advancing the goals and ideas of President Gurbanguly Berdimuhamedov. According to the rector, at the Summit on Climate the representative from Turkmenistan spoke about the introduction of modern technologies in all sectors of the economy, the reduction of greenhouse gas emissions, the National Strategy for Climate Change, the National Strategy of Turkmenistan for the Development of Renewable Energy by 2030, the adoption of the new Law of Turkmenistan on Renewable Energy and other activities carried out in this field at the national level.
At the roundtable, John Hamilton, Chargé d'Affaires of the Embassy of the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland in Turkmenistan, Gurban Allaberdiyev, Representative of the United Nations Development Program, Head of the National Team for Preparing the Fourth Communication and the first two-year report of Turkmenistan on Climate Change stressed the importance of the initiatives and the practical efforts made in this area.
According to all the speakers, the range of concrete initiatives put forward by the head of the Turkmen delegation at the international conference, the 26th session of the Parties of the UN Framework Convention on Climate are aimed at the adaptation and mitigation of the effects of climate change and were broadly supported by the international community, which shows the high prestige of our country in the world.
The participants expressed confidence that Turkmenistan’s initiatives on climate change would be successful on the international arena.
