WORLD BOOK AND COPYRIGHT DAY
On April 23, the international community celebrates World Book and Copyright Day. As highlighted on the official website of the United Nations, this date was chosen to pay tribute to the outstanding literary legacies of world-renowned authors such as Miguel de Cervantes, William Shakespeare and Inca Garcilaso de la Vega, marking the anniversary of their passing.
Recognizing the book as a fundamental instrument for the preservation and dissemination of knowledge, as well as a reliable medium reflecting all spheres of human life, World Book and Copyright Day was first observed on April 23, 1996. The decision to establish this international date was adopted through a Resolution during the 28th session of the UNESCO General Conference on November 15, 1995.
Since 2000, the UNESCO, in collaboration with three major international organizations representing the global book industry publishers, booksellers and libraries has annually conferred the prestigious title of “World Book Capital” upon a selected city to promote literacy and the culture of reading worldwide.
