The visit of the General Secretary of the United Nations to Turkmenistan: A New Page of Efficient Relations
On July 5, 2024, the General Secretary of the United Nations, Antonio Guterres visited Ashgabat. The head of the international organization was welcomed by the the National Leader of the Turkmen people, Chairman of the Halk Maslahaty of Turkmenistan Gurbanguly Berdimuhamedov.
As it is known, since 1992, Turkmenistan has been a full member of the United Nations. Effective cooperation with the United Nations and the development of solutions on important issues of the global agenda is one of the main directions of the foreign policy of Turkmenistan.
In the official delegation hall of the “Oguzkent” hotel, our Hero Arkadag had a meeting with the distinguished guest. The Chairman of the Halk Maslahaty of Turkmenistan and the General Secretary of the United Nations confirmed that they are ready to continuously develop efficient relations, noting that traditional cooperation is being strengthened in many areas, such as social economic, the legal system, humanitarian, education, health care, ecology and several other areas. The rich experience of cooperation gathered in the recent years and its versatile capabilities serve as a reliable foundation in this work. At the same time, confidence was expressed that relations based on effective proposals and efforts to implement them will be further developed.
On the second day of the visit, July 6, conversations were held between the President of Turkmenistan and the General Secretary of the United Nations, Antonio Guterres. The meeting was held at the Oguzkent hotel. During the meeting, issues of cooperation and development in various fields were discussed.
After the conversations, the President of Turkmenistan awarded the distinguished guest with a medal commemorating the 300th anniversary of Magtymguly Pyragy. As we know, this medal was created in the year of the 300th anniversary of the birth of the great poet, and was presented to the Head of the United Nations for the first time. Expressing his grattitude, the leader of the international organization expressed his views on the creativity of the classical poet and thinker of the East Magtymguly Pyragy.
During his visit to Ashgabat, Antonio Guterres visited the United Nations Regional Center for Preventive Diplomacy for Central Asia and the United Nations Permanent Mission in the country. Heads of state institutions, rectors of higher educational institutions, heads and representatives of United Nations agencies working in Turkmenistan, mass media, as well as students of the Institute of International Relations of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Turkmenistan participated in the opening ceremony of the new building of the Central Representative Office in Turkmenistan. During the event, the head of the international organization expressed his sincere gratitude to President Serdar Berdimuhamedov and the Government of the country for the comprehensive assistance and support, and expressed confidence that the cooperation between Turkmenistan and the United Nations will be successfully developed in all priority areas.
The current visit of the Secretary General of the United Nations and the conversations on important issues are an important step on the way to expand the efficient relationship. The agreements reached on the results of the meetings will provide a powerful impetus to the implementation of new projects and programs, depending on the goals and objectives for sustainable development for the period up to 2030.
