World Post Day
Once upon a time, people all over the world could not send and receive a letter, a message (SMS), as now, via the Internet, social networks. Earlier, in an age when there were no modern means of communication – the Internet, a modem, social networks – people used the mail service and waited a long time for a reply to their letters. These letters were delivered to the addressees via special postal couriers on foot, on horseback or on a bicycle. Although such high technologies as a personal computer (PC), fax, e-mail, social networks have entered our lives, we still use mail services in our daily life. Today, modern mail keeps pace with the development of scientific and technological progress. Many people around the world use the postal service because it helps people communicate with each other around the world and provides a wide range of commercial services to the community. Therefore, every year World Post Day is celebrated, which allows us to correctly understand and appreciate the invaluable work of postal services and postal workers.
World Post Day is celebrated annually on October 9, on the anniversary of the Universal Postal Union (UPU), which began its work in 1874 in the Swiss capital of Bern. In 1948, the UPU became an agency of the United Nations. World Post Day started in 1969. Many interesting things happen on this day: post offices in some countries hold exhibitions, auctions, events to present or improve new postal products and services.
The UPU is organizing an international letter writing competition for young people. Each year has a theme for this competition. For example, the theme of the 2014 World Post Day Youth Letter Writing Contest was “How Music Can Affect Life”. The theme for 2021 is Innovation for Recovery.
