International Day of Older Persons
Turkmenistan celebrates the International Day of Older Persons with the entire world community on October 1. This day has been celebrated in the country since 1991 with widespread concerts and thematic meetings. International Day of Older Persons occupies a worthy place in the Turkmen society as a holiday contributing to the strengthening of cohesion and unity.
“Honoring and respecting the elders, raising their dignity is one of the noblest principles bequeathed to us by our ancestors,” said the President in his address to all representatives of the older generation. We regard showing respect for the elders and ensuring a decent quality of life for them as one of the important humanitarian areas of state policy.
The tradition of honoring elders comes from our ancestors. When we embark on the implementation of a large-scale program designed to ensure the further prosperity of Turkmenistan, we, following a centuries-old tradition, hold advice with our elders. It is they who give a start to the sowing campaigns of wheat and cotton, open the harvest season for grain and cotton harvesting, emphasizes the festive message.
At the origins of our unity are the wise advice and instructions of the elders with rich life experience, gray-haired mothers – keepers of family hearths. “It is they who call on young people to engage in creative work for the sake of the country’s present and future successes, set an example of cordiality, hospitality and humanism to young people,” esteemed President noted in address.
According to the Turkmen leader, on the occasion of the International Day of Older Persons, cultural events and meetings are held in Ashgabat and the regions of the country. At the celebrations, words of gratitude to the elders for their great educational work have been expressed.
