THE ROLE OF TURKMENISTAN IN PROMOTING MULTILATERALISM AND DIPLOMACY FOR PEACE ON THE INTERNATIONAL STAGE

April 24, marks the International Day of Multilateralism and Diplomacy for Peace. The decision to celebrate this Day was made on December 12, 2018 by resolution A/RES/73/127 of the UN General Assembly.
The main goals pursued by the UN when establishing a new holiday were: the desire to popularize any initiatives for the benefit of peace and peaceful ways of resolving conflicts of various levels and natures, to show the obvious advantages of diplomatic methods of resolving conflicts, as well as the flip side of the settlement process associated with bloodshed, innocent victims, devastation and deprivation - as a consequence of refusing the opportunity to sit down at the negotiating table.
In the heart of Central Asia, Turkmenistan stands as a shining example of a nation committed to fostering peace and cooperation on the global stage. As the world commemorates the International Day of Multilateralism and Diplomacy for Peace, Turkmenistan's contributions to international relations take center stage, showcasing the country's dedication to building bridges and forging alliances in pursuit of a more harmonious world.
    What is multilateralism?
Multilateralism is often defined in opposition to bilateralism and unilateralism. Strictly speaking, it indicates a form of cooperation between at least three States. Nevertheless, this «quantitative» definition is not sufficient to capture the nature of multilateralism. Indeed, it is not simply a practice or a question of the number of actors involved. It involves adherence to a common political project based on the respect of a shared system of norms and values. In particular, multilateralism is based on founding principles such as consultation, inclusion and solidarity. Its operation is determined by collectively developed rules that ensure sustainable and effective cooperation. In particular, they guarantee all actors the same rights and obligations by applying themselves continuously (and not on a case-by-case basis, depending on the issue handled).
Situated at the crossroads of civilizations, Turkmenistan boasts a rich tapestry of cultural heritage and historical significance. From the ancient Silk Road to modern-day diplomacy, the nation's strategic location has long been a catalyst for dialogue and exchange among nations.
On the International Day of Multilateralism, Turkmenistan reaffirms its commitment to the principles of diplomacy, dialogue, and cooperation as essential pillars of global peace and security. Through active engagement in multilateral forums such as the United Nations, Turkmenistan amplifies its voice on the world stage, advocating for peaceful resolution of conflicts and the promotion of mutual understanding among nations.
For Turkmenistan's scientists and scholars, the International Day of Multilateralism offers a platform to showcase the country's contributions to scientific research and innovation on the global stage. From advancements in renewable energy technology to initiatives promoting sustainable development, Turkmenistan's scientific community plays a vital role in addressing pressing global challenges and advancing the cause of peace and prosperity.
Moreover, Turkmenistan's commitment to multilateralism extends beyond rhetoric to tangible action on the ground. Through initiatives such as the Turkmenistan-Afghanistan-Pakistan-India (TAPI) gas pipeline project and the Turkmenistan-Uzbekistan-Kazakhstan-China (TUKC) railway corridor, Turkmenistan fosters economic cooperation and regional integration, laying the foundation for lasting peace and stability in the region and beyond.
Turkmenistan's dedication to multilateralism and diplomacy for peace is exemplified by its active participation in international organizations and initiatives. The country is a member of the United Nations and plays an active role in various UN bodies, contributing to discussions on global issues ranging from disarmament and human rights to sustainable development.
Furthermore, Turkmenistan has pursued a policy of positive neutrality, emphasizing peaceful coexistence and non-interference in the affairs of other nations. This commitment to neutrality has earned Turkmenistan recognition as a reliable partner for dialogue and cooperation on the international stage. In the realm of cultural diplomacy, Turkmenistan showcases its rich heritage through initiatives such as the Turkmen Carpet Day, recognized by UNESCO as an intangible cultural heritage of humanity. By promoting cultural exchange and understanding, Turkmenistan strengthens the bonds of friendship and cooperation with nations around the world.
Economically, Turkmenistan's strategic location at the crossroads of Asia makes it a key player in regional trade and connectivity initiatives. The country's ambitious infrastructure projects, including the construction of the Turkmenbashi International Seaport and the Ashgabat International Airport, position Turkmenistan as a hub for trade and investment in the region.
Moreover, Turkmenistan's commitment to environmental sustainability is evident in its support for initiatives such as the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) and the Paris Agreement. The country's vast natural gas reserves also make it a potential player in the global energy transition towards cleaner and renewable sources of energy.
As Turkmenistan continues to pursue its vision of a peaceful and prosperous future, the International Day of Multilateralism and Diplomacy for Peace serves as a reminder of the country's unwavering commitment to dialogue, cooperation, and mutual respect among nations. In a world marked by uncertainty and complexity, Turkmenistan stands as a beacon of hope, demonstrating that through multilateralism and diplomacy, peace and prosperity can be achieved for all.
