World Science Day
The importance of science in ensuring a country’s peace and development is extremely great. A society that possesses advanced science always lives in tranquility and harmony. Such a society constantly moves forward, reaching new heights of progress. Where science exists, goodwill and friendly relations prevail. Indeed, science is a tool for the development of international cooperation. As science advances, society also advances.
On the international level, November 10 has been declared “World Science Day for Peace and Development,” and this holiday is celebrated every year with great ceremony. It draws public attention to the vital role of science in human life and highlights its significance throughout the world. The main purpose of this international day is to direct scientific and technological achievements toward the benefit of society, to use them in the interest of peace and development, and to raise awareness of the importance of national and international commitments in this field.
Various events are organized in many countries in connection with World Science Day. The need for closer relations between science and society was emphasized at the World Conference on Science, held in Budapest in 1999. According to the conference plan, UNESCO officially established the World Science Day, and in 2001, during the general session, its celebration was declared necessary. This day was celebrated for the first time on November 10, 2002, and since then it has been widely observed all over the world.
In this regard, UNESCO carries out extensive work every year together with governmental bodies, scientific and educational communities to spread knowledge about the meaning and importance of World Science Day.
