World Day to Combat Desertification and Drought
The World Day to Combat Desertification and Drought, celebrated around the world annually on June 17, was established by the UN General Assembly in 1994. The date for the holiday was chosen in connection with the anniversary of the adoption of the United Nations Convention to Combat Desertification on June 17, 1994. The Convention today serves as the basis for all international action to combat this scourge.
The problem of desertification is a problem of global importance, which has serious consequences for the system of international environmental security, efforts to eradicate poverty, socio-economic stability and sustainable development.
In this regard, the UN General Assembly proclaimed the period from January 2010 to December 2020 as the UN Decade for Deserts and the Fight against Desertification. Its purpose was to promote dryland conservation activities. Every year, the World Day to Combat Desertification and Drought has a specific theme. The well-being of the population and food security are growing. Returning landscapes to their natural form makes our habitats more stable, reduces the risk of natural disasters, also helps to conserve biodiversity, reduce greenhouse gas emissions and slow climate change.
