A BRIDGE BETWEEN EAST AND WEST: STRENGTHENING TIES BETWEEN TURKMENISTAN AND ITALY

Central Asia and Europe, vast and geographically distinct regions, might seem worlds apart. Yet, diplomacy, like a skilled architect, can bridge these distances, fostering partnerships that benefit all involved. Such is the case with Turkmenistan, a nation rich in history and natural resources, and Italy, a cultural and economic powerhouse. Recent developments, including the high-level visit by Turkmenistan's Ministry of Foreign Affairs to Italy in March 2024, highlight a flourishing relationship brimming with potential.
Turkmenistan, a Neutral State since its independence in 1991, has carved a unique path in international relations. This policy allows it to act as a bridge between nations, fostering regional stability and economic cooperation with all. Italy, with its long diplomatic tradition, respects Turkmenistan's chosen path and sees it as a potential partner in an increasingly multipolar world.
Both nations boast rich and distinct histories. Turkmenistan, occupying territory along the ancient Silk Road, was a crossroads of civilizations for millennia. The Akhal-Teke horse, a breed renowned for its speed and endurance, stands as a national symbol, representing the country's proud nomadic past. Italy, on the other hand, has left an indelible mark on the world stage. From the artistic brilliance of the Renaissance to the formation of the Roman Empire, Italy's legacy is one of artistic innovation and political influence.
On March 18, 2024, with the participation of the Minister of Foreign Affairs of Turkmenistan Rashid Meredov, and the Director General of the Agency for Transport and Communications under the Cabinet of Ministers of Turkmenistan Mammethan Chakyev, a round table was organized with the European business community on the topic “Turkmenistan and the EU: towards a new economic partnership”. The event brought together more than 120 representatives from various countries in a hybrid format, where opportunities for cooperation in key areas such as energy, investment and trade were discussed.
Their meeting with the Deputy Prime Minister, Minister of Infrastructure and Transport of Italy Matteo Salvini, focused on expanding cooperation across various sectors. Political dialogue, already positive within international organizations like the UN, is poised to deepen. Additionally, a meeting with the President of the International Agricultural Development Fund, Alvaro Lario, underscored potential collaboration in agricultural development, a crucial sector for both nations.
Beyond political and economic considerations, the visit placed a significant emphasis on cultural and humanitarian cooperation. The delegation's meeting with the leaders of Rome City Hall laid the groundwork for exciting joint ventures. The signing of a document for a 2025 archaeological exhibition of Turkmenistan in Rome's prestigious Capitoline Museum exemplifies this burgeoning cultural exchange. Imagine the awe-inspiring artefacts from Turkmenistan's ancient cities displayed alongside the treasures of the Roman Empire, fostering mutual appreciation for each other's rich heritage.
The path forward for Turkmenistan and Italy lies in continued dialogue and a commitment to mutual respect. By leveraging their unique strengths and fostering cultural exchange, this partnership holds the potential to blossom into a significant force for regional stability and economic prosperity. The March 2024 visit serves as a stepping-stone on this promising journey, bridging the gap between East and West and building a bridge between these two historic nations.
